Stockport 8
Plans are being made to build a new neighbourhood area west of Stockport Town Centre, named Stockport 8. This new area will consist of different types of housing, spaces for small businesses and green spaces for people to relax and come together. Stockport MDC commissioned PLACED and Social Value Portal to help create a strategy for having a good mix of things in the new neighbourhood that benefits the whole community.
Stockport 8 was a joint project of ECF (English Cities Fund), MUSE, Homes England, Legal & General and Stockport MDC.
What we did
PLACED delivered engagement from December 2023 until March 2024 in two phases. The first phase consisted of 2 pop ups, 2 co-design community workshops and 4 full-day primary school workshops. The second phase consisted of a 3-day youth programme for secondary and college students, 3 community workshops and another 2 full-day pop up events.
We asked about the following;
- Understanding local young people’s social value priorities
- Asking the local community about their problems and solutions
- Asking local people about what they want to see in Stockport Town Centre and the problems/solutions within this
- Asking local people about their thoughts and views of the Stockport community
Outcomes
Findings from our engagement informed the social value strategy of Stockport 8.
Throughout all the engagement activity delivered, there was a clear want for more activities, facilities and support for the community, including the way people travel and access the area. There was also a great love for Stockport and the desire to continue building an area that is friendly, supportive and open to improvements.
Young people told us that they would focus on culture, heritage, creativity, community and safety.
