Salford Crescent Academy
In October 2021, PLACED worked with Salford City Council, the University of Salford and the English Cities Fund to deliver the Salford Crescent Academy. We created an exciting four-day youth engagement and education programme for young people from Greater Manchester, to involve them in emerging plans for the area.
What we did
The creative built environment design programme was designed to enable young people to have their say in emerging plans for Salford Crescent, a major programme of investment in Salford that’s set to transform the area over the next decade. Over four days, 33 young people took part, working alongside design professionals and students to hear about plans, explore the site, develop design briefs and create their own proposals for a key public space in the development.
In addition to inputting into a live project, participants developed their skills, gained new knowledge and learned about diverse careers in the built environment, from architecture to planning.
Outcomes
After the programme, participants provided feedback on their experience, which included:
- 92% said they now know about different careers in the built environment
- 83% said they now know about study routes in the built environment
- 83% said they now feel confident talking about their views and ideas of the built environment
- 83% felt they had enhanced their application for university / further education
The programme was funded by Salford City Council, the University of Salford and the English Cities Fund (a joint venture between Homes England, Legal and General and Muse Developments).
I have learnt a lot more about architecture, design and construction. I have also learnt to become more confident of myself and realise that I gave potential to do amazing if I put my mind into something.”
