Arncliffe – Community engagement for the refurbishment of the Arncliffe Sports and Community Centre
PLACED were commissioned by Halewood Town Council in 2022 to complement work being completed by Harrison Stringfellow Architects, to deliver engagement on the refurbishment of the Arncliffe Sports and Community Centre (Arncliffe Centre) in Halewood. Engagement work was also envisaged to offer light support to the preparation of a neighbourhood plan for Halewood.
What we did
The aim of the engagement was to understand whether local people support this project, and which design ideas, activities and services they thought would make the Arncliffe Centre more attractive and better used. Engagement also asked some wider questions about community services in Halewood and services and facilities which might be missing.
We delivered four engagement pop-up events.
- 30th July, Halewood Carnival, Hollies Hall
- 4th August (morning) at the Arncliffe Centre
- 4th August (afternoon) at Leathers Lane shops
- 8th September feedback pop-up at the Arncliffe Centre
We also ran an online survey that ran between 22nd July and 12th September.
Overall, 125 people attended the pop-ups and 74 people filled out the online survey. We found out that the Arncliffe Centre is the most used community facility in the area, used for the range of activities they hold for adults and children, as well as their hire facilities and location next to a park. People want to see a new café, informal chatting spaces and more event spaces within the Arncliffe centre, with more cycle parking, outdoor spaces and play equipment. More activities should be focused on older people such as bingo and games, as well as catering for young people and mums with babies. There was also a huge desire for the space to be bright and welcoming with a better car park. Moving forward, we recommended that, alongside the ideas shared within the report, that special attention needs to be given to transport and routes to the centre, and making the centre accessible to all.
Our report will directly input into the design for the refurbished Arncliffe Centre.
